ChatGPT brand mentions: how to check yours

Ask the questions your buyers ask, in a clean chat, several times each, and count. Here is the method step by step, a sheet to record it, and what Google's and Bing's own tools can tell you.

Short answer

Open a Temporary Chat in ChatGPT set to Unpersonalized, ask 5 to 10 questions your buyers would ask, ask each one at least 7 times, and count how many answers name your brand. Write down which other brands and which websites appear. ChatGPT has no report of its own that shows your brand mentions.

Before you start

ChatGPT rarely gives the same list of brands twice, so a single answer can show you in or out by chance (why). The check below counts over several runs instead. Allow about an hour for 5 questions.

The check, step by step

  1. Write 5 to 10 buyer questions. Use the words a customer would type, not your own description. Mix the kinds: "best [category] for [situation]", "[your brand] vs [competitor]", "how much does [category] cost", "what should I use to [job]". Good sources of real phrasing are the long questions in your Google Search Console queries, and the "grounding queries" in Bing Webmaster Tools (step 6).
  2. Open a clean chat. In ChatGPT, open a new chat, select Temporary, and choose Unpersonalized before you send the first message. OpenAI says Unpersonalized "does not use memory, custom instructions, or plugins", and you can't change it once the chat has started (OpenAI Help Center, Temporary chat, archived copy of Oct 27, 2026). ChatGPT still uses your approximate location from your internet address, so check from the country your buyers are in; OpenAI notes a VPN can change the location it infers.
  3. Ask each question at least 7 times, each in a new Temporary Chat. A study that repeated prompts found a single run's result was off by a standard error of 0.37 on a 0 to 1 scale; the error first fell below 0.10 at 7 runs (Schulte et al., arXiv, Apr 8, 2026).
  4. Record every answer in a sheet like the one below.
  5. Count. For each question: named in how many of the runs? That share is your number. With 7 to 10 runs, treat a difference of one or two answers as noise.
  6. Check Google and Bing too (below), then repeat the whole check monthly with the same questions.

A sheet to record it

RunNamed?PositionOther brands namedWebsites linked
1Yes2ndBrand A, Brand Ba review site, a forum thread
2No–Brand A, Brand Cnone
3Yes4thBrand A, Brand B, Brand Dyour site

Example rows, not real data. "Websites linked: none" means ChatGPT answered without citing a page.

Then the result for that question looks like this:

6 of 10 runs

Example: named in 6 of 10 runs. The "Websites linked" column tells you more: if you were named but no page about you was linked, ChatGPT named you from what it already knew, not from a search.

What Google and Bing show you, free

  • Google AI Mode is Google's chat-style search mode, opened from the AI Mode button on google.com or in the Google app (Google Search Help). Ask it the same questions the same way.
  • Google Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in the normal Performance report, under the "Web" search type, mixed in with ordinary search clicks (Google Search Central). Since June 3, 2026 a separate report shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode (impressions, by page, country and date), not clicks; Google says it reached all websites by August 31, 2026 (Google Search Central blog).
  • Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (since February 10, 2026) showing how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, which pages, and the "grounding queries", the phrases the AI searched for when it found your content. It lists no clicks (Microsoft Bing blog).

None of these show ChatGPT's answers, so the hand count above is still the only way to see what ChatGPT says about you without a tracking tool.

What to do with the result

If you're named rarely or not at all, start with how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business. If the answers name you without linking any page, look at where ChatGPT gets its information.
